Hawaii Dive: Eels!

Went again on John's boat to Scottie's Place. This time we saw a snowflake eel, swimming! Found a big whitemouth again, and again could not find its head. Also saw a beautiful potter's angelfish, and juvenile and adult yellow corus. Really a great dive!

Hawaii Dive: Eels!

Went with Jack on John's boat to Scottie's Place. Found a big zebra eel and a big whitemouth eel near each other. We only saw the bodies, we couldn't find their heads. Also saw a very small dragon moray eel!

Hawaii Dive: teeny beauties!

This was my first dive with prescription lenses. Went on John's boat with Jack, and was absolutely amazed at all of the teeny gorgeous fish! I couldn't believe it! When I told people, they looked at me like I was crazy, then explained that they were always there. I had just never seen them without the prescription lenses before. What a difference!

Hawaii Dive: Turtles!

Went on John's boat to Turtle Canyon for a dive. True to the name, we saw turtles! :-)

Hawaii Dive: Eel with cleaner wrasse

This was the third dive of my Open Water I class. We went to Turtle Reef. When we were going around after doing our exercises, we found a huge moray eel being cleaned by a cleaner wrasse. It was very cool!

Hawaii Dive: Dolphins!

This was the first dive of my Open Water I class. We went to Kahe to do a shore dive near the power plant. We swam out and descended and were sitting on the bottom doing our exercises when I saw a very large grey shape swim past behind the instructor. I immediately thought "SHARK" and got scared, but then another one went by and I noticed it was smiling. DOLPHINS! I pointed a few times but everyone thought I was pointing at the instructor, who thought I was asking some sort of questions. I was thinking, "No, no, we all know how to take our masks off, look at the DOLPHINS!" But nobody else saw them. When we were getting out, they thought I was making it up, until my sister (who was waiting on the shore) asked us if we had seen them, that they were playing all around us. :-)

Why this blog exists

This blog is a tool for me to track the animals I see. :-) I have been snorkeling and diving for years now, and have seen many tropical fish and such. I went to South Africa on safari and of course saw many animals there. Also in Africa one of the rangers got me interested in birding, so I started paying attention to the birds I saw there. When I got home I read that Central Park is one of the best birding locations in the US, and since I basically live there, I thought I'd start looking at birds there.

I have many memories of seeing animals, and some pictures, and want to have them here, mostly as a memory aid. I can't imagine this will be of much interest to other people, but I guess you never know.

I'll be putting as much detail in as possible. Actually that's not 100 percent true. I'll be putting as much detail as I can about the sightings in terms of date, time, location. And hopefully a decent description, pictures if I can. And maybe notes about where the high-res picture is on my computer.
